Our Banks have New Customers

From the Editor
How many of you have read the 2013 Family Quilt Newsletter on my site (sherleneonline.com)?

The NewMonday Show
The discussion included the value of sharing historical events with younger generations. Can you believe that the tribes were disputing over God's (Yahweh, Allah) name? The older generations were no longer using the same name for Him. I AM.... (Exodus) If you missed it you may listen to the broadcast any time at  sherleneonline.org, 24/7 or read lecture notes under the video tab on my official site.

Let's talk OUR BANKS HAVE NEW CUSTOMERS
President Obama gave a short speech today about the issues facing Congress. Our representatives must make a lot of financial decisions in the next ten days, or many people will be out of work.  There is also another issue facing American citizens that begins in March: SSI and SSDI benefits will no longer be sent out in check form. SSI recipients are now required to have a bank account (debit card). How will this change the way Blacks feel about using banking services? As the polls reflect, a majority of older Blacks have never had a bank account (checkings or savings). I am quite sure that there are fears associated with learning and using something new. If you find that your family member is having a really challenging time with their account you may want to add a responsible party to his or her account. You will be able to write checks and also deposit checks. You can also receive the same services if they have a savings account. So, if there are any younger generations out there reading this, please, be patient with the older folks during this time of change. It would also be a nice idea for us to show these citizens how to write out a proper check, pay a bill using their debit card, etc. Hopefully, these citizens will not lose benefits with the pending decisions of Congress.

Credit cards vs. Debit cards:
  • Credit cards are given to you with a certain amount of financial credit. It is normally a fixed amount  that is given by a card company or bank. You may choose to pay the balance off each month, or a fix amount per month until the credit that you used is paid off. There is a fee that is added each month if you do not pay off the debt balance (between 12% and 27%). You should always try to pay off credit debt as soon as possible. Unique households, I have discussed with you of having balance in all things including your finances: assets and liabilities.
  • Debit cards have cash assigned either as a gift or associated with a bank account.  Some banks will not give a debit card for savings accounts.  You may want to choose a bank that has weekend hours or evening hours.
