Global Christmas Traditions: Light Is The One Thing In Common

Each year, for the holidays, my company theme is Global Christmas Traditions of Americans.  It is an opportunity to introduce or reintroduce family traditions of your ancestors with the younger generations in your immediate household--your international side of you. For unison, I always invite families from other countries to participate in the theme as well.  I have discovered that most countries around the world share one common tradition behavior: lighting of candles. Amazingly, the definition of light and lighting of candles vary by community. Apparently, so does the climate.  In warmer climate communities instead of light as a holiday symbol, light-colored paper decorations are used. Austria - Light is a symbol of the eternal light God gave man in the Christ Child: "Christ is born." Three candles are lit during the holidays: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Belgium - Candlelight religious services. Brazil - Lighting of candles by faith belie

Quotes: What Makes An Effective Leader

Any one can have the job task of being a leader, what makes one (a male or female) become an effective leader? This would be a leader that really get the job done, above and beyond, or is productive in the anticipated outcomes--for self, a team, or a group of people. *This edition is dedicated to Nelson Mandela (or Mandiba) and the African citizens. Mr. Mandela will be laid to rest on December 15, 2013. He was not a religious leader, that would be a different kind of leader. Mr. Mandela was a community leader who, through consistent leadership efforts of just doing the right thing, became an effective political leader. He perfected his leadership ability while being surrounded by racial and cultural-identity hatred in his own country. Quotes Every right implies a responsibility, every opportunity an obligation, every possession a duty.- John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Action springs, not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility. Dietrich Bonhoeffer There are two primary

African American and Native American Females: Effects of Chemical Hair Relaxers

Source: Maclin, M. 2013, Oct. S2S.  Maclin is a doctor who has studied over 70,000 African-American hair loss cases, www.drmacmd@gmail.com Maclin provided an interesting article of possible relaxed hair care side effect that I thought I would share during Native American Appreciation Month (Nov.) Chemical-Free Curl advised until the age of 16 for healthier young females in our communities. Avoid perming/relaxing if you are experiencing current hair loss or scalp issues. Avoid relaxers if you have been diagnosed with fibroids or infertility. Avoid relaxers if you are currently pregnant. Why? Most hair loss is attributed to early perming and abuse (such as leaving perm on longer than suggested, perming too frequently, usage of the wrong strength of perm for hair texture). Sherlene's advice: I know with my mixed cultural hair I have a challenge with wanting to overperm - make it straight realizing it will only be that way for a few days. Let's talk: Divorce and Co-Parenting

Just because you get a divorce, parenting doesn't stop... Shouldn't stop! Do you know this nasty word, co-parenting. Most traditional legal systems and judges do not like this nasty word because it offers too much flexibility in parenting arrangements--who will do what and when? Will there be consistent routines in place? I know, right, all of these challenging questions while your trying to get over an "adult" ... but not your child(ren). Yes, parents, can and many do, co-parent after divorce or separation. Be creative in new parenting expectations: more or less demands, habit building routines, and more should be discussed between you and your ex, and, then, external people that you both associate with.  If not you will have too many people in your bizamiss (pardon the cultural slang). Some suggestions What daily routines does your family follow regarding  mealtime? chores? schoolwork? playtime? television habits? bedtime? friends/relationships? What traditi

Let's talk: Visiting Your Local Public Library

Did you know that your local public library offers a wide variety of services to adults and children, and home schooling students (hi, my home schoolers I am so proud of you)? Don't hesitate to ask for a tour of all the wonderful services your local library has to offer you and your unique household. Services Offered Books and fine art activities to children, youth and teens Community meeting room Study room Diverse and multicultural collection of books and other library-related materials Computers and other technologies to use  Job and career training workshops Literacy programs Free music downloads Reading clubs Early learning program (Books can be checked out for longer lengths of time or a larger quantity than typical checkouts.) Support your local library by donating or purchasing books and other library materials or volunteer. I do :)

Let's talk: Literature Enjoyment For Your Teens

Today's teens are between the age of 12 - 18 (some adults even go further in age to 20). Well, at least we know the legal age of being an adult ... right?  How do you introduce book reading habits to a teen? Here are a few suggestions offered by Michall Jeffers ( WashingtonFamily.com, 2013) : Try forming a teen book club or a parent-child book club. Allow your teen to help out.Choose reading aloud and solo reading activities. My suggestion is to include both forms of reading styles.  I prefer for students to read aloud, giving everyone an opportunity. Create a quiet zone rule for your book club. And other rules as needed, stick with them or revise them as needed. Include other fine arts habits when reading a book that your teen particularly enjoys. It would be a good idea to ask your child's public school teacher for a book list of all books that will be read throughout the academic year. Read them before your child does.  Is it appropriate reading materials for your u

Source: Article written by CNNMoney.co, Aug. 2012 Visit your local library. Note: Only one person can have access to an e-book copy at one time. You may also have to wait for a new title and bestsellers. Let's talk: Do You Know Your Reading Bill of Rights?

Read every day, lead a better life: Every child has the right to read, www.scholastic.com/ReadEveryDay Make certain that your child understand what he/she is reading: homework directions, in-class assignments, etc.  In order to complete math assignments, you must first read the directions, and, then, solve the math problem by reading it. Teach your child(ren) to read a math problem; it's just like reading a good mystery story. Five Reasons Kids--and Parent--Embrace E-Books They're instantly engaging. An interactive experience. They motivate reluctant readers. They're easy to take traveling, especially during family-bonding time. They save a trip to the bookstore. They save money. E-books tend to be cheaper than printed books.  Source:  Scholastic Instructor (2013, Summer) Have you read a book to your child this week?

Let's talk: Secrets for Making Children Want to Read Pt.1

Company theme: Read Literature in the Presence of a Child 8/22-9/22, yearly. Have you read my journal-memoir, The Script in My Box: A Journal of Forgiveness ? It is an appropriate read for any family. Never read stories to children that you don't enjoy yourself. Don't get too comfortable while reading aloud a new book. You may become drowsy. Don't be surprised if your kids interrupt with a lot of questions. WHYYYYY :) Try to answer his/her questions immediately. One question at a time, this means taking turns if there are more than one child listening. Don't confuse quantity with quality. A shorter story time is better than an inappropriate or hurried time. Don't try to compete with TV. Make certain that the TV is off before your unique household's read-aloud time. Change the mood or the setting: outside, indoors, etc. Have a set time for bed time, chores, and other activities. Make story time a consistent time for your household. Keep track of a subjec

Let's talk: So, You Want To Go To College

Take an organized college bus tour? Yes, I would it would be nice to travel to a campus with a group of your peers.  Make certain that it is a reputable student tour company. Stay in the dorm for free?! Yes, many colleges have programs that pair up prospective students with current students (Source: Destination Depot). Ask about school-sponsored discounts such as fly-in reimbursement. Is it possible to eat meals on campus if you are not an enrolled student? Yes, it is possible. Ask your college-tour guide before arriving. Would you rather be in debt for several years or begin your adulthood debt free? Research universities may not be your best choice for the small-community environment. How many administrators to students? How many students normally participate in a classroom setting? How many part-time instructors lead undergraduate courses? How many instructors are long-standing professors. Source: www.blackenterprise.com (2012, July), and Glasbergen, R. (n.d.)

Let's talk: Back-to-School Shopping Tips

Source: chase.com/blueprint All school children (homeschoolers, public/charter schoolers, and private schoolers) need materials and supplies, tools, to perform their best. 1. Set a budget: Inform your child(ren) how much you are willing to spend based on product-category needs. 2. Create a list of needs and wants. 3. Never pay more than you have to. 4. Shop later in the season for discounts. Not every item on your kids' back-to-school list has to be purchased before the first day. What can wait? What needs should be brought during sales? 5. Have a smartphone? Turn your mobile phone into a shopping assistant.  Choose free apps that enable you to get the best deals. You can also scan barcodes to compare prices on the items. 6. Do comparison pre-shopping by search on- and off-line. 7. Avoid using credit cards if you can not pay off within one month. Remember Christmas is coming...

Let's talk: Cleaning Dirty Laundry

In a recent article Esquire Magazine (Anna Peele, August 2013) answered a question about the time frame of cleaning dirty laundry. Let's talk: How Do Children Learn Language

Children begin very early in life to acquire language skills. Language helps children gain independence, interact with others, and participate in the surrounding culture.  It plays a role in social interaction and expression of emotions, as well as learning. Most children follow a sequence of language development: crying and cooing, babbling, first words, and first sentences.  By the age of 5 most children have developed a proficiency in oral language and use it effectively to accomplish their purposes and meet their needs. Even very young children are soothed by the mere voices of loved ones.  Sing, chant, and carry on casual conversations with children--whether or not they answer or even before they are able to understand.  Children tune in more than we sometimes realize.  The language they hear is the raw material from which their own language develops--and through which much of their learning about the world takes place. Kids learn a lot when adults simply talk to them in the

Let's talk: Canned Goods Storage during Summer Months

Independent Thinking: The Road Not Taken

Please take a moment to download family-entertainment funsheets and more at the family portal, www.sherleneonline.com  I hope that each unique household, in every one of our states, has a blessed Independence Day! Did you know that the actual historic event took place on July 2 instead of the Fourth? My presidential campaign slogan is "It is you. It is your family. 'It'...is America." The New Monday Show The lecture discussed having balance in everyday life, and the importance of defining what "independence" means to your unique household. Each unique household can take steps to changing the lack of freedoms if there is an absence of such choices. First, though, there must be a show of cooperative actions taken in making your goals a reality. American Credit Rights and Reportings

From the Editor The 2013 Summer Challenge Activity has begun: Education Reform and College Expenses Debt. There is no formal structure for activity participations. Like I told the staff members who signed me up for the S## deal, "I didn't sign up for it which means I do not have to acknowledge or participate in it." Actually, I think it would have been cheaper to have paid me a full-time salary, according to my calculations of history and my roles and duties. Now, would be a good time to discuss credit maintenance and reportings. The New Monday Show Are you always curious of what your leader(s) are up to or what they request for you to participate in? Then you may want to listen to the current episode of this unique radio broadcast, sherleneonline.org 24/7. What is "Universal Pre-K"? and Why is President Obama For It?

From the Editor Thank you to all who participated in the 2013 strategy meeting (Harmony Picnic) for the family portal ( www.sherleneonline.com ). I have made several changes to the portal that improves your customer service experience.  Please note that most on-line changes will be completed by this August: keeping my promise of having the company 75% available on the Internet. I appreciate your cooperation during these revisions. The New Monday Show It was a very good lecture discussing details of productive family trees.  As you know, the company's logo is a tree image that has green leaves. Green leaves provide you an image of a strong and rooted tree. A tree with many rings, many years of leadership experience to become your next President :) Wouldn't you like to have a president that is bold? I am an aspiring political leader who will not shy away from challenging confrontations. Fathers and Baby Names

Shall we say 3 p.m. EST to begin our strategy meeting for 2014. Did you know that 79% of all workers say they want to work from home or at least part of the time (teleworkresearchnetwork.com). The majority of telecommuters are actually men (53%, Glass, J., Noonan, M) ladies or moms. We've all heard the cliche "What's in a name?" Alcohol or Other Drugs During Pregnancy

From the Editor Since this is the last week of my hosted event, Womens Month, I wanted to discuss a more serious issue than our normal gender conversations. Ladies, you could have participated in any relating topic about women. What I noticed was that most of you focused more on women's history than current topics. Do we really value our today's experiences as women? Or are we stuck in remembering yesterday when today and tomorrow (Lord willing) is waiting for us? Thank you to those who have participated in this month's event. Lastly, all parents realize that you should not do drugs, especially when pregnant. Do you, your unique household, really know the side effects and symptoms of drug addiction? Men, your turn - entire month of June :) Speaking of men, ladies, Tyler Perry Studios' two new shows begin this week. The Haves and the Have Nots airs this evening on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). Children, Children, and more Children

From the Editor Thank you to all citizens of these United States who served or are serving in our Armed Forces. I believe that it really doesn't take a whole village to raise children. I believe it takes dedicated parents to raise children, especially today's youth. Back in the day or maybe even today, children as young as five were allowed to work in factories and roam the street.  It has only been recent that we have taken an interest in the development of youth.  Researchers, clinical/medical staff, and health care are cashing in on those really important years (age 0-14). Did you know in some countries they have state-sponsored baby-making programs? I would like to further the discussion by providing adoption resources for those who may be interested in pursuing raising other (biological) parents' child/ren. Are You a Bully?

From the Editor White female viewers, what do you say to black kids who are being forced (by their parents) to blend into our majority-of-white public schooling districts? Would you consider it bullying? If so, who is really doing the bullying? The New Monday Show I introduced a new discussion within the Holy Qu'ran (behaviors and attitudes of war and peace). sherleneonline.org 24/7 Let's talk Are You a Bully? Cleaning up after a disaster: Reassuring children and yourself

Gardening and Children

From the Editor Prayers are shared for the Boston Marathon victims.  Earth Day is Monday: Many communities are having events now through Arbor Day (April 26, 2013). Most often when we think of family at the center, we think of our unique family tree (your mom's side and your dad's side). How will you celebrate nature with your child(ren)? NewMonday Show The lecture included the death of Sampson, and the division of a female (into 12 parts). sherleneonline.org 24/7 Let's talk Gardening and Children Gardening allows children to plan and work together to create something they believe is important, and it allows opportunities for learning: reading, writing, math, and science. A garden doesn't have to be planted outside or require dozens of kinds of plants.  A cut-in-half gallon milk jug will do (or a glass gallon container is better) just fine. Allow young children to do "research" to find out what kinds of plants might grow best in your yard or in contai

Productive Chores for Families and Businesses

From the Editor April's hosted event is spring cleaning month and it's tax time.  Let's clean our dwellings and  finances for the better. Color and Art

From the Editor I hope everyone enjoyed their bonding time with family and friends during Resurrection weekend.  This week, I would like to discuss "colorful beginnings."  Spring is the time of year for newness and an abundance of nature's colorful images. So let your child(ren), grandchildren, little nieces and nephews, or little cousins enjoy the season.  The NewMonday Show Still in the Book of Judges (Holy Bible). I must admit that maybe I should advise parental discretion because there is a lot going on: virginity, wars, death, and births. sherleneonline.org 24/7 Let's talk  Color and Art We grown-ups provide the time, the space, the materials, and the atmosphere needed to create the wonderful works of art that only children can create.   In valuing a child’s first artistic attempts, however, we should appreciate the beauty of the color and design rather than worry about the finished product. Real art for children is personal .   Art can be as sim

A No-Good Man

From the Editor This is Holy Week for many Christian faith believers, including myself.  This week I would like to share a portion of a mini sermon that I prepared while in lay speaking (United Methodist) class, a few years ago. The NewMonday Show The lecture discussed a new leader (Gideon) for the children of Israel. We must be cautious to carry our faith with us in any battle that we face, sherleneonline.org 24/7 Let's talk A No-Good Man Men, you are not perfect and you never will be while living on this earth.   Jesus (Yeshua, Isa) said that he, himself, was not any good (Matthew 19:17).   Let me explain who is a no-good man. □        He walks on water (faith). □        He saves his community and family. □        He heals. □        He trains up a child in the way he or she should go. □        He prays (call him up). □        He cries. □        He labors and toils for the kingdom, or participates in faith believing activities. □        He has some form o

The Value of a Piece of (White) Chalk

From the Editor It's White History Month at the center.  The March family fun packet is now available on my official site.  As most of you know I have a very diverse center: all racial identities of unique households.  We must always remember that North America is a fairly young country compared to our global ancestors. The NewMonday Show I introduced the Book of Judges (Holy Bible) Available at sherleneonline.org 24/7 Let's talk The Value of a Piece of (White) Chalk How many of you remember getting Christmas gifts that required add-on products?   I would often ask my White public school teachers for pieces of chalk. “Why do you want a piece of chalk?” (You would have thought I was asking for a piece of gold.) Back then, in my area, you couldn’t buy school chalk in a regular store.             My mother had purchased a chalkboard toy chest for me, and it only came with a small box of chalk.   I would say, “If I am good today, will you give me a piece of chalk?” I re
